SE Scotland Artillery Officer's HP
A rare, (faded) gilt, helmet plate for an officer of The South East of Scotland Artillery (Militia) with three lug fastenings (north, east and west). As Litchfield 39.
Note: There is limited gilt remaining on the front of the plate (price adjusted, accordingly) although the remains of gilding are clear on the back. The added wheel is also typical of an officer's plate.
Norman Litchfield's book on The Militia Artillery 1852-1909 shows a similar helmet plate for The Scottish Division (Militia) dated to 1882-89.
The book states the blue cloth helmet plate was authorised for wear by artillery officers after 1880. I believe this was a short-lived helmet plate worn just prior to the militia artillery reorganisation of 1882 (when the South East of Scotland Artillery became part of the Scottish Division).
