Highland Vol Artillery HP
A rare, white metal, helmet plate for The Highland Volunteer Artillery with three lug fastenings (north, east and west).
Note: Unfortunately, the large lion is missing its tail and the reverse of the plate has some red felt stuck to it.
This helmet plate is described by Norman Litchfield & Ray Westlake, in their book on The Volunteer Artillery 1859-1908 (p96), but not illustrated. It is dated to post 1890.
Litchfield & Westlake state: "Under Army Order 45 of February 1890, the 1st Inverness was redesignated as The Highland Artillery Volunteers retaining the sub-title (Inverness, Cromarty, Nairn, Ross and Elgin) adopted in 1880."
