5VB Hampshire Regt Cap Badge

A rare, white metal, cap badge for the 5th (Isle of Wight) volunteer battalion of The Hampshire Regiment with two lug fastenings (east and west). Headquarters at Newport, Isle of Wight. Churchill 1038 or Woods 6.5.

Note: This badge is approximately 28mm wide x 32mm tall.

Terence Woods, in his book on 'The Military Insignia of Hampshire and The Isle of Wight 1702-1992' describes a white metal collar badge, 31mm tall x 26mm wide. This tallies with the size of badge illustrated in Colin Churchill's book on in his book on the History of The British Army Infantry Collar Badge.

Woods adds: "It is suggested that it was also used as a cap badge between 1885 and 1901."

Perhaps it is not a coincidence Woods states the similar cap badges worn by the WW1 Isle of Wight Volunteer Training Corps (VTC) were 32mm tall x 28mm wide (see Woods 10.15 and 10.16).
