40th Foot Officer's HP

A rare, silver and gilt, helmet plate for an officer of The 40th Foot (2nd Somersetshire, later 2nd battalion of The South Lancashire Regiment) with three lug fastenings (north, east and west). Worn circa 1878-81 only. As KK195.

Note: The gilding is in pretty good condition, there is a speck of verdigris and there are a few extra holes in both the backplate and behind the numerals. One of the pins holding the sphinx in place is also damaged.
